We had a terrible thing happen in Charleston this past month, but our city has responded in such a positive and with determined fashion! It makes me proud to live in Charleston!

Summer is here and it’s getting warm. July is one of the slowest months for events here in Charleston, as kids are at home and most residents are either vacationing or just headed to the beaches. Here is a list of a few of the events in town this month:

Spoleto Festival 2015The weather is simply spectacular, and it’s a great time to enjoy the greatest city in the world. 

May brings one of Charleston’s premier cultural/artistic events, the Spoleto Festival USA (Photo of CASUS CIRCUS | KNEE DEEP by Photo by SYC Studios - Sean Young).

But there’s also the Greek Festival, the North Charleston Arts Festival and the First Flush Festival among others.

April is finally here and everything is in bloom in Charleston!  The Family Circle Cup started this week and the Azaleas are ready.  The Farmer’s Markets are opening back up and the Blessing of the Fleet prepares us for shrimp season.

NEVER GET BORED:  NOVEMBER  EVENTS

Charleston, SC was just voted #1 City in the U.S. by Travel and Leisure (T&L) Magazine for the 4th year in a row, and #2 City in the World (behind Florence, Italy).  T&L also named Kiawah Island as the Top Island in the U.S. and the 2nd best in the World

Trip Advisor named Halls Chop House as the 4th best restaurant in the US and Circa 1886 came in at #12.

One of the premier paddlesport events on the Atlantic Coast, the festival will be held at James Island County Park on April 20-22."

Charleston Battery Division Champions!!

Blackbaud Stadium - Charleston BatteryThe Charleston Battery, our local soccer team, is playing against the Richmond Kickers this Saturday, August 28 at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island for the USL-2 league championship!

Tickets are priced from $10-$18 and can be purchased online or by calling 843-971-4625. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. and kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

We hope the Battery takes the home field advantage and gets a victory - let's go and support our local team - Go Battery!

SHAG LESSONS, BEER, BIKINI CONTEST!

Boone Hall Beach PartyBoone Hall, the historic plantation in Mount Pleasant (Charleston, SC metro) is holding its annual BOONE HALL BEACH BLAST this Saturday, from 11 am until 10:30 pm.

This fun event is packed with activities: Shag lessons, beach volleyball, a bikini contest and ongoing music concert that kicks off at noon and includes artists such as Maurice Williams, The Zodiacs, The Sugarbees, Mystic Vibrations, The Fantastic Shakers and The Tams.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. Gates open at 11 a.m. and close at 10:30 p.m.

FamilyAs we celebrate Mother's Day across the Western Hemisphere, one has to wonder why we call a house a "home"?...

Here's Wikipedia's definition of "home":

"A home is a place of residence or refuge comfort. It is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest and be able to store personal property.........As an alternative to the definition of "home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition--instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort."

Grab a few eager high school art students; then mix them with a local shrimper, a talented chef, a Wadmalaw egg farmer, a determined elementary student, and a renowned muralist. Sprinkle in some teamwork, and garnish with a dash of fun. The result? Four creative (and almost edible) mosaics that reflect the importance of local culinary traditions.

James Island's FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Festival of LightsJames Island's 20th FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS opens this Friday on the James Island County Park. From November 13th to January 3rd, this Holiday Event is a tradition in the Lowcountry and provide a fun activity for all the family.

You can get a sneak preview tonight during the 2-mile fun run and walk from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Entry fee is $10 per car with up to 15 guests. 8-foot holiday cards that were designed by local students will be on display. There all sorts of fun ancillary activities for kids and families such as the carousel, Santa's Village, gift and sweet shops, roast marshmallows and pictures with Santa. Don't miss it this year!

According to a recent report from the Immigration Policy Center, businesses owned by Latinos and Asians in the state of South Carolina had combined revenues of $2.8 billion and provided over 20,000 jobs throughout the state in 2008. The Center also reported that Latinos and Asians living in South Carolina had a combined purchasing power of $5.2 billion.

In 2007, immigrants make up 5.4% of the workforce in South Carolina. With this in mind, the Latin American Business Council (LABC) will host a Seminar and Expo on Thursday, December 10, that will educate attendees on the economic impact that Latin Americans ...

THINGS TO DO IN CHARLESTON - LATIN AMERICAN FESTIVAL

Latin American Festival of CharlestonThis Sunday from noon to 6 pm, the traditional "Festival Hispano" takes place at North Charleston's Wannamaker Park. The festival has a new name this year - "Latin American Festival" - since it focuses mostly on Central and South American culture, music and foods. 

The activities include a demonstration of the Brazilian martial art/dance capoeira by Capoeira Charleston, as well as a salsa dancing competition with music from DJ Luigi from Latin Groove, the premier Latin DJ in the Charleston area.

In addition to the music and dance, the festival provides a great opportunity to sample some of the traditional foods of Latin America, including tamales, tortillas, empanadas and chorizos.
