Area Efforts to Assist Birdlife
Restoration of the Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary, located in Charleston Harbor, is now complete, giving pelicans and other shorebirds that migrate along the East Coast close to 32 acres of important nesting habitat. The work was a collaborative effort of the US Army Corps of Engineers, the SC Department of Natural Resources and many donors that involved using over 600,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project. Another effort that is in the early stages is the installation of new tracking towers in the Charleston area and across the state to improve the understanding of and protection efforts for migratory birds (and insects and other animals) in this area of the greater Atlantic Migratory Flyway. One of these Motus towers was just installed in Francis Beidler Forest in Harleyville.  Read more here.

Developments Planned for I-26 & Nexton Parkway Interchange
Plans for this up and coming gateway to Charleston include a mix of commercial, industrial and residential developments. A Harris Teeter supermarket is coming to the area that lies within the Nexton community. The northeastern quadrant, which now lies within Summerville, could see 300,000sf of commercial space, 200,000sf of light industrial space and as many as 700 homes. Hudson Automotive Group is planning a new Nissan dealership in the southeastern quadrant and a mixed use development is proposed for the southwestern one. Berkeley County is assisting the developers in recruiting employers in targeted industries to occupy this space and to help achieve its own community goals of live-work proximity and affordability.
