Heron Farms

Local Saltwater Hydroponic Farm is the First in the Nation

Did you know that you can grow plants in saltwater? Well, Sam Norton, founder of Heron Farms, has just created the country's first indoor saltwater hydroponics farm. Growing up in the Lowcountry, Sam was no stranger to the flooding that comes with it, and while visiting Bangladesh, he witnessed the devastating effects to farmers of saltwater intrusion on their rice paddy farms. This prompted him to question if, instead of letting this natural occurrence continue to be a burden on many lives, there were a way to use it as a resource instead. Hydroponic farming is different in the sense that, while most farming is done in soil, hydroponic farming is done solely in water and, in this new approach, in saltwater. The first plant being grown at Heron Farms is a sea bean, which is an edible plant that grows in the salt marsh. This local company is even going as far as for every pound of sea beans sold, it will replant a square foot of salt marsh along the coast of South Carolina and Bangladesh! Talk about giving back to the environment!  Read More Here...  Learn More About Heron Farms Here...

New Scholarship Available to Charleston High School Grads

It has recently been announced that local South Carolina resident, Ben Navarro, will be funding a new scholarship for students who graduate from Charleston County high schools. This grant is called the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund and will be in the sum of $10,000 per year. This new scholarship now opens a new door for many students who never thought they would be able to go to college due to financial constraints. Students must meet a few qualifying factors in order to receive this scholarship, including "anyone who graduates from a Charleston County high school and qualifies for a state lottery LIFE or Palmetto Fellows scholarship and a federal Pell Grant". Ben and his wife want to help students who are passionate about their schooling and taking that next step to higher education. Having this scholarship will help level the playing field and will allow more students to gain that higher education they and their families might not be able to afford on their own. New Timeline for Moving Boeing's 787 Production to North Charleston Plant

Just a few months ago, Boeing announced that its Everett, Washington production of the 787 would be moved to the North Charleston plant beginning in mid-2021. Plans have recently been brought forward with the new timeline to move the whole production line to South Carolina by March 2021. This gives the Everett plant only a few months before the last plane leaves that facility. However, due to a flaw found in some Dreamliners, there will still be some work related to the wide-body program that will be completed there beyond this new date. The company's commitment to safety and high-quality airplanes has now resulted in the strengthening of its quality assurance program. When the North Charleston plant becomes the sole assembly line for the 787s, Boeing will be producing fewer jets per month than when it was sharing production with the Everett plant, but it will meet new monthly demand levels resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
