Watch Out for Rodents This Fall!

My friend Chris Bavosa of East Cooper Termite and Pest Control sent me this article he wrote about rodent infestation, which I thought would be interesting to share...

Summer is coming to an end. The weather will soon turn colder and the days will grow shorter. East Cooper residents have sent their children back to school. All these mean one thing to East Cooper Termite and Pest Solutions…RODENTS. These furry little friends will start looking for places to stay warm during the winter. Insulated crawlspaces, attics, garages, and wall voids may become a residence for the Norway or Roof rat. The white footed mouse may show up close to Halloween and nibble on some treats in your home.

Rats are very troublesome pests. They have caused more deaths than all the wars in history. They harbor lice and fleas that can cause serious diseases such as trichinosis, typhus, infectious jaundice, and even bubonic plague.

Rats and other rodents also cause considerable damage to property. They contaminate food, destroy crops, and cause almost 1 billion dollars in damage in the United States each year. Residents in the East Cooper area have seen rats chew through electrical and plumbing lines as they navigate their way through attics and crawlspaces. They create entries into the home by gnawing holes in foundation vents, soffits, or garage drywall. They climb trees or walls and make their way onto the roof where they look for access to an attic. They are able to squeeze into a hole the size of a quarter to enter your home. Once inside, they leave droppings or unwanted smells wherever they may travel.

This month, take some time to inspect your foundation vents for holes or broken screens. Inspect the gable vents in your attic to make sure rodents cannot enter your attic space. Surprisingly, rodents often gain entry to a crawlspace under an air conditioning unit or through a rusty crawlspace access door. East Cooper Termite and Pest Solutions can help with a free rodent inspection.  Be proactive and eliminate your rodent problem before they are in your home long enough to nibble on your Thanksgiving pie or even Santa’s milk and cookies.
