Conceptual study released on the proposed Lowcountry Lowline
There's news about the Lowcountry Lowline, a linear park system proposed for the defunct rail corridor that runs along the high-ground spine of the Charleston peninsula. This space was purchased by the City with negotiation assistance from the nonprofit Friends of the Lowcountry Lowline. There’s a new “conceptual study” but further design work awaits public input. The Friends now see a green "mobility system," parks and walking paths going not only north and south but east and west, ways to get more people out from behind the wheel of their cars. Darius Rucker named S.C. Tourism Ambassador
The S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism recently named Darius Rucker as the official ambassador for South Carolina tourism! This Grammy (and other) Award-winning musician and S.C. native will share his name and recognition in the hopes of further strengthening tourism across our state. Following seven consecutive years of growth, the state tourism industry has become a $23.8 billion industry. Under this partnership, Darius will appear at numerous tourism events such as the annual RBC Heritage Golf Tournament on Hilton Head Island in April. His image is already on the cover of the state's official vacation guide for 2020 as well as on other marketing materials for the state. Darius, a Middleton High School and USC alumnus who still resides in South Carolina, has been a de facto ambassador for the state throughout his career, but now it's official! Read More Here...
"The Cooper" hotel to be built on the waterfront in downtown Charleston
A major hotel project that City of Charleston officials say "will increase public access to Charleston's waterfront" has broken ground. Previously known as the "Waterfront Hotel", its official name is now "The Cooper" and it will consist of 225 guest rooms, retail spaces, a rooftop, a great lawn, a dock and more. The project was presented to Mayor Teckenburg a short time after he was elected and he was immediately on board when he learned of the 400-foot expansion of public waterfront access that it would provide between Waterfront Park and the restaurant Fleet Landing.
