Charleston Businesses Get a Double Whammy

Many of the downtown restaurants, retail shops and hotels that normally would have been serving a high volume of out-of-town visitors at this time of year but had to close partially or totally during the pandemic "stay-at-home" order were just re-opening and looking forward to making up for their losses. Unfortunately the rally in downtown Charleston on Saturday, May 30th to protest police handling of George Floyd in Minneapolis developed into an uncontrolled riot and looting spree along King Street and neighboring streets later that night. Many businesses were affected and saw their windows broken and merchandise looted. Many local volunteer brigades went downtown with shovels and wheelbarrows on Sunday to help clean up the mess caused by the vandals. This positive reaction reminded everyone of the "Charleston Strong" spirit which was evident after the mass shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in 2015. Read more...

AccelerateSC Releases Reopening Guidelines 

AccelerateSC, the COVID-19 advisory response team assembled by Governor McMaster to relaunch the state economy in a strategic and safe manner amidst the coronavirus pandemic, has been developing and releasing protective guidance and guidelines for re-opening and operating facilities and operations in several sectors.  To date, these are now available for athletic fields and youth sports events, attractions, charitable bingo, child care, close contact businesses, day camps, faith-based organizations, general businesses, health care, manufacturing, professional and licensing boards, public swimming pools, restaurants/hotels/golf courses, and State employees. These guidelines and other useful information made available by AccelerateSC can be viewed here.

Boeing Lays Off Employees

The Post & Courier reported that Boeing Co. "will lay off thousands of U.S. workers this week, as it seeks to cut a tenth of its workforce and offset plummeting demand for new aircraft caused by the coronavirus pandemic." The company declined to specify where the layoffs are coming from, and how many employees of its North Charleston plant will be affected. But the layoffs will come from its commercial plane and services division, which is slated to lose about 15% of its workforce. Read More...
