Good news continues for the Lowcountry as we near the end of 2025 and set our sights on 2026! This month we feature local news relating to fine dining, aviation (yes, again!), healthcare and housing. Be sure to follow the links provided where you see bold blue font to find out more.
In the area of fine dining, we are thrilled to share the news that three area restaurants have each earned a Michelin star. They are Malagón Mercado y Taperia, Vern's, and Wild Common. The winners were announced along with the launch of Michelin’s new American South guide covering seven states at a ceremony in Greenville in early November. Twelve of the 228 restaurants listed in the guide are located in Charleston. More information about the guide can be found here.
There’s more aviation news to report this month, with Boeing starting site prep for a $1 billion, 1.2 million sq.ft. expansion at its North Charleston facility. Over 2,500 people will be involved during the construction process and 1,000 more jobs will be created over the five years post-completion. Boeing plans to expand production to ten 787 Dreamliner airplanes per month in 2026.
In healthcare news, a phased opening of the new four-story tower began early last month at Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. Upon full completion in early 2026, it will double the hospital’s capacity to 100 beds and expand its specialty services to include ICU, cardiology, neurosurgery, and orthopedics. As many as 380 new staff will be added.
Needed housing is also being added to the area, with some examples of recent news featuring student housing and townhomes. Landmark Properties and Henderson Park are developing a new $16.5 million student housing complex on East Bay Street for the College of Charleston. To be named the Mark Charleston, it will provide 335 beds across 99 units, as well as offer amenities ranging from a fitness center and pool deck to study areas and ground floor retail. It is expected to be completed in time for the 2027-28 academic year. Navy Yard Charleston, a redevelopment project on the site of the former Charleston Naval Base, will soon welcome 55 new townhomes in its new Marine Row development being built by DRB Homes. Construction will begin in 2026, with the first homes ready in 2027.
And that's a wrap for our Charleston area news for 2025!
