$1 Billion Medical Campus Planned for North Charleston

Roper St. Francis Healthcare is planning to invest $1 billion to develop a major medical facility on 27 acres along Mall Drive in North Charleston that would replace its current downtown complex as part of its 2030 strategic plan. It is expected to consist of a new full-service hospital with an emergency room on the site of the former city hall as well as a medical office building with specialty care and outpatient facilities across the street and next to the new city hall. The complex, which could require five or so years for completion, would have easy access to I-26, I-526 and rapid transit. Read more here.

FAA Designation Granted to Aeronautics Program at CSU

The year-old aeronautics program at Charleston Southern University earned designation as a Part 141 pilot school this fall. Such schools are regulated and required to deliver a highly structured training program. CSU is the only institution located in the state to offer a BS in Aeronautics. Read more here.

Benefitfocus Agrees to $570 Million Cash Purchase

The board members of the publicly-traded software firm Benefitfocus Inc., with its headquarters on Daniel Island, have unanimously accepted a cash offer from Voya Financial Inc. for its purchase. Voya provides services in the areas of investments, insurance and retirement planning. The $10.50 per share deal still requires approval by the company’s shareholders. Read more here.

German-owned forklift manufacturer KION is planning a $40 million, 250,000 sq. ft. expansion that will double its North American headquarters facility off of US Highway 78 in Summerville, generate 450 new jobs on-site and allow it to begin producing lithium ion batteries needed to power its products. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early December and completion is expected by 2024. Read more here. Global startup Eveon Containers Inc. – that repurposes used shipping containers for sustainable building, shipping and storage solutions – has announced that it has selected the Lowcountry for its North American Headquarters.
