Ready for the Oyster Roast Season?
Fall weather brings another delight of the Lowcountry: Oyster roasts! From early October until late April we'll experience frequent events, fundraisers and parties featuring plump, steamed oysters. Get your shucking knives ready!
Some of the well known oyster roast events in the area include:
- The Historic Charleston Foundation Oyster Roast (April 2)
- Lowcountry Oyster Festival at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt Pleasant (January 31st)
- Wagener Terrace Neighborhood Association Oyster Roast (November 1st)
- Friends of the Hunley Oyster Roast and Silent Auction (TONIGHT, Friday, Oct. 23!)
- Charleston Junior Woman's Club Pink Roast (this SUNDAY, Oct. 25th)
- Friends of Richmond Plantation Oyster Roast at Bowens Island (January 10)
All in all, there may be dozens of oyster roasting events. In most of these, oysters are normally steamed, rather than roasted on coals.
Did you know that oysters are considered a very healthy food? I had the idea that they were very high in cholesterol, but I was wrong!
Here is what Wikipedia writes about oysters:
"Health benefits of eating oysters: Molluscs such as cockles, mussels, oysters, scallops and clams are very low in cholesterol. These species contain about half as much cholesterol as chicken, and much less cholesterol than most red meats. In addition, they are high in such nutrients as Omega-3 oils, Zinc and Vitamin D, and are very low in fat."
